Retro Video!

Remember that one time when we were on tour?

It feels like it was already so long ago. Six months ago we were getting ready to go on our first big US tour. Now we're finishing up recording our first major label album! It sure has been an amazing 2008.

Because the year has been so incredible, let's relive some of the fun moments. (This is like that episode of Saved By The Bell when they're at that beach resort and they just sit around and reminisce and show clips from previous shows.)

Here was a fun little time in Texas:

Accordion Sword Battle

What happens when you mix us with an awesome accordion player, a dog, and some swords? Oh, and the raddest kid ever. Well, you can probably guess, but here's what really happened.

THE ROXY!

For all of you who missed The Roxy show on Friday night, here's a little recap of how it went down. Sorry for the lack of blogs. It's been hectic getting the record done and with the holidays and... sorry, lots of excuses, we know. We'll try to be better about keeping you updated. Until then, enjoy:

How has October been for all of you? Anyone watched the World Series? We aren't either.

COLUMBUS DAY!

Happy Columbus Day!!

We're celebrating by working on songs in the studio, of course. I doubt we'd be doing anything all that special even if we weren't. Jason thought about dressing up as Christopher Columbus to show his support, but he left the wig at home. So sad. Maybe next year.

LIVE ON STICKAM!

It feels like just yesterday that we were having face-to-face conversations with you, usually while we were driving through the night going from city to city to make it to our next show. It's actually been months since we've done that. Hard to believe it's been so long.

Not any longer!! We're going to be back in front of our webcam so you need to be sure to be in front of your computers TOMORROW, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 8TH, 2008 at 4PM PACIFIC TIME/7PM EASTERN.

Be sure to check us out at www.stickam.com/aftermidnightproject.

You can also check it out below using this nice, little Stickam player. Can't wait to chat with everyone!

October 1st!?

Sorry for the delay in posts. We just got completely caught up in the studio for the past several days and lost track of time. Staying up until 5am night after night causes you to lose track of the days. But, it's been time well spent.

We've been recording guitars and now TJ is working on tracking his bass lines while Jason lays down the vocals. It's all really coming together. We're now almost a month into the whole process and it's still as exciting, invigorating, and creatively fulfilling an experience as when we first arrived.

But, enough about us. We need to hear from you! It feels like it's been so long since we've seen any of you. Drop us a comment and let us know how you're doing. Can you believe it's October already!? Time sure flies... Fill us in on your lives right now - school, classes, friends, fun, family, everything.

AND - for those of you who were curious about all the unanswered questions in our last video where we ordered lunch and quite a lot of salsa... please enjoy the sequel:

Late Night Studio Session

We are now halfway through our second week in the studio and some of us have reached a level of delirium. Some more than others. During a brief break from recording, Spencer and Christian found themselves... well, you should just see for yourselves.

Meet John Feldmann

And now a little introduction by our producer John Feldmann. We've been spending countless hours over the past week with him and while we've had our chance to say hello, John felt a little left out. So, fans, meet John. John, meet the fans.

What We Learned On Tour

As we've been spending hours and hours in the studio this week, we've been remembering just how much fun we had on tour and how much we learned about ourselves and life in general.

So while we're occupied in a room with no windows, please enjoy today's installment of a new series of little videos that show what we learned from the Robot Roadkill Tour 2008.

Robot Roadkill Check In #1

Most of you have probably seen the video "The Return of Darryl." Well, we haven't seen him since that day when he hitchhiked out of Evansville, IN. We figured he probably caught up with some other buddies or another band and stayed out on the road. Turns out, we were wrong. Darryl is in Los Angeles! Someone tipped us off to a Craigslist ad that he took out looking for work. Check it out (if you click on the picture it'll open it up big so you can read it):

We're not really in the market for a new roadie at the moment - not that we'd hire that guy again - but it's nice to hear that Darryl is back and he's doing all right. We didn't leave on good terms, exactly, but there were moments that we all had a really fun time - like in Texas. Well, until he got out of control. Which is usually what always happened.

Anyway, maybe drop him a line if you know of any bands that might be interested. Here's the link to the actual ad:

SECRET SHOW PICTURES!!

Thanks so much to everyone who made it out our secret show in Hollywood on Saturday. It was really amazing to see so many familiar faces who have been with us since the very beginning as well as new ones that we've met along the way. We had a total blast and we hope you did, too.

You can watch the whole show on the Stickam.com player we have at the top of the page. And in addition, check out some pictures of the show, as well. If you've checked out our MySpace bulletins, you should have read that we got signed to Universal/Motown and we actually started recording our VERY FIRST FULL LENGTH ALBUM TODAY!!! We'll keep you posted on everything but just remember that we wouldn't be here without all of you. You've helped make this happen and for that we thank you.

The Return of Darryl!

I know everyone heard about Darryl over the tour - some of the rumors true, some not - and you've probably wondered whatever happened to him. He started out with such promise, such potential, but it didn't quite all come to fruition. Here's what happened when he came back on tour after having had some previous disagreements with the band in the past...

NEW STUDIO BLOG!!!

Check it out! We started a BRAND NEW BLOG so you can follow us while we record our album in the studio for the next couple months. The new address is:

ampinthestudio.blogspot.com

It's already up and running and we'll be posting brand new pictures, videos, and everything else you loved about the tour blog starting next week when we actually get into the studio.

Tell all your friends, too!

See you in the studio!

After a few weeks of rest and getting back to our lives in LA, we're back up and blogging again. If you haven't already checked out the amptour2008.blogspot.com blog, check back there to see a couple new videos that you may have missed, including the live acoustic set from St. Paul, MN. There's a link on the right side of the page for your viewing pleasure.

If you didn't already know, we will be performing a SECRET SHOW in Hollywood on Saturday. This Saturday, as in tomorrow! Check out our MySpace to find out the details. Make sure to get there early so you can be sure to make it in. We'd love to see as many faces as possible. This is the last show we're going to do before we head into the studio on MONDAY!!! We're so excited and we'll have so much to tell you about next week.

In case you can't make the show tomorrow, be sure to check it out on Stickam.com - or use the player at the bottom of our page - to watch us LIVE on the web! Ahh the beauty of technology. You can see us without even being in the same zip code!

It's going to be a really exciting and busy couple of months. For everyone who followed us along on tour, join us in the studio as we record our very first full-length major label album with producer John Feldmann!!

Acoustic in St. Paul!

I'm not sure how many of you there still are checking in on this blog now that the tour is over, but for those special and dedicated few, we have something of a treat for you.

You probably already saw the live acoustic set on Stickam.com a month or so ago when we were in St. Paul, MN. Turns out we actually recorded the show so that if you happened to miss it live, you can see it now! Check it out - it includes two never-before-heard performances of The Postal Service's "Such Great Heights" and the acoustic version of "A Backlit Medley."

Enjoy!

A Fond Farewell

All of my pre-reminiscing for the past couple weeks and the lack of updates for the past week probably has tipped you all off to the sad truth: we have reached the end of the Robot Roadkill Tour 2008.

It has been such a great trip chocked full of amazing memories and great people that none of us will be forgetting any time soon. The tour has only made us all stronger and more cohesive as a band and we'll be riding this momentum into the studio where we'll be recording our first full-length album with producer John Feldmann.

We'll be continuing to keep you posted on our goings-on from here on out - either on this blog or back to the regular MySpace page. Thanks for following us across the country - we hope you've had as much fun as we have. It wouldn't have been the same without all of you fans.

I'll let TJ send us off. Until next tour...

Last Show with JoCo

As I write this, we've already left Josephine Collective behind in their hometown of Kansas City. It was a long drive for us as we watched them diminish in the rear view mirror on our way to Wichita. We blasted the WE ARE THE AIR through the van's speakers all the way there to try to fill the void. It only made us more bummed to not have them with us for the last three shows.

It's amazing how quickly you grow close to people when you're around them every day for six weeks. You learn the little quirks of everyone's personality. You start to just expect them to be around all the time. It's only a few week pause before we're back together again for The Roxy show on September 6th. Let's hope we can survive apart until then.

Damon left the tour earlier than everyone else for his brother's wedding. This left an opening on guitar for the final show. Christian rose to the occasion. Check him out playing the last song at the final show in Evansville, IN. Look out for TJ at the end, as well.

Get Crunk'd!

We just spent all day driving through the country from Rochester, NY to Evansville, IN. We passed through 5 states on our trek and now we're spending the morning and early afternoon doing our laundry, which was a long time coming.

While we take care of our linens, please enjoy this video:

Damon's Last Day

The first event to signal the end of the tour has just happened: Damon had to leave early to head down to Cancun, Mexico for his brother's wedding. It was sad to see him leave but even sadder to realize what his departure means for the rest of us...

The tour really is coming to an end.

We only have one more date left with the remaining members of Josephine Collective - Saturday, August 9th in Evansville, IN. After that, we're off on our own for the final three shows as we make our long trek back to California.

Even though the Robot Roadkill Tour 2008 is nearing its finale, the fun is just beginning. You haven't seen the last of AMP and JoCo together...

Feeling Inspired

Inspiration comes from everywhere. And, usually in the most unusual of places from the most unlikely of things. We meet so many people while out on the road and so many of them are ridiculously entertaining and unique characters that it's not surprising that songs would come out of this experience. Here's a glimpse at the songwriting process after having a brief conversation with a police officer in Philly. (Don't worry, it was a friendly conversation in a coffee shop. No one was breaking any laws - as far as we know.)

I Love This Town!

New York City.

The Knitting Factory.

Saturday night.

Main Stage.

It really doesn't get much better than this.

We've truly come clear across the country. LA to NYC. Hollywood to The Big Apple. West coast to East coast. It can be easy to lose sight of just how huge of a milestone this really is when you're so busy traveling from city to city, town to town, venue to venue, Subway to Subway for weeks on end. But, this really is something big. A moment that when you look back upon you'll see how so many things changed from that point on. Having never once played one show in NYC, with no opening act to bring in a crowd, and through amazing word-of-mouth, AMP rocked the house to a huge group of fans - most of whom knew all the lyrics to every single song.

We also came to a sad realization that we only have five more shows on this tour with Josephine Collective. It became the first time that really signaled the end to Robot Roadkill 2008 and all of us felt a pang of sadness for the first time. It's not even over yet but I know that I will miss it all as soon as we get back. Once you get settled into the routine of touring - the engineering feat of loading and unloading the entire trailer at every venue, setting up the merch booth and somehow getting the one working lamp to light up, getting a quick look at the neighborhood, the show itself, and everything in between - and seeing the same people every moment of every day, it just consumes you. It becomes your entire life. You no longer think of time as sectioned off into days and hours so much as cities and highway mile markers and exit signs. Of bathroom breaks and gas fill-ups and Green Teas. The thought of all of that ending soon and needing to readjust to a normal life seems almost daunting. But as all things come to an end, so must this tour. And we're all so much the wiser for it.

We love New York and we can't wait to come back. Here's to the last 2 weeks of tour:

P.S. Check back VERY SOON for the Lansing show footage. You won't be disappointed. Also - thanks to all the well-wishes and home remedies everyone gave us for our affliction with the black death. I can't say that everyone is yet healed; however, we've all taken a turn for the better (for the most part) and I think we're going to survive this bout of plague after all!

Saturday, August 2, 2008

Quick Little Cover

With a little downtime before the show, Jason and Damon jammed outside The Ottobar in Baltimore, MD. It ended up sounding a little more like something else. Something rather similar. That's when Martin called it. Check out their quick little jam:

DANNY'S BIRTHDAY!!

Okay, so I'm about a week late (8 days late, actually now that we're on Eastern time). Sorry, Danny. But hey, better late than never right!?!?

For everyone who didn't already know, Danny celebrated his birthday last Saturday!!! We're so happy he's with us and that he made it through another year of life. To celebrate, his wife Shay come out to Chicago to surprise him.

HAPPY (BELATED) BIRTHDAY, DANNY!

An Unwanted Visitor

I suppose that it was bound to happen. Spending virtually every moment of our lives for a month and a half with six other guys in a cramped van and then barely getting any sleep every night finally caught up to us. Lots of people probably figured that after so much time together, we'd end up killing each other. Our health has actually come into jeopardy recently, but - surprisingly - it has nothing to do with each other and everything to do with an unwanted addition to our group:

THE BUBONIC PLAGUE!!

Okay, so we don't have THE plague. But, whatever it is, it sure has been miserable and shows no signs of going away. I thought that I was rid of it once already only to have it come back even stronger than before. Symptoms include green snot (and lots of it), sinus congestion, dry mouth, sore throat (feels like you're swallowing glass), sinus pressure, deep chest cough, chills, low-grade fever, headache, and fatigue. It's an all-around nasty bug, whatever it is, and we seem to give it a lot of bodies to use to sustain its existence - so far we've all gotten a touch of it. Spencer has had it the worst as you can see here:

And here:

And you don't want to see how many of these we've gone through:

It's been quite the week and all I can say as I write this is that I hope that we survive it. It started out with an amazing homecoming show for Spencer in Lansing, MI. Both Danny's and TJ's parents made it out for that show, as well. (More photos and awesome video of that to come - as soon as we get healthy enough to put it together for you to see.) But since then it's been all horrible plague and pestilence.

Hopefully a steady diet of Fuze Green Tea, multivitamins, DayQuil/NyQuil, and soup will cure us quickly and prevent it from ever returning. If not... well, it's been a fun ride while it lasted.

If any of you out there have any good get-well-quick tips, please drop us a line. And please hurry. Time is running out...

The Lansing Visit

Sorry we've been out of touch the past couple days. We've been in Lansing, MI for a crazy awesome show at Mac's Bar. A ton of family and significant others were there. It was a great time and we're sad to leave but excited for the East Coast leg of the tour starting tomorrow in Buffalo, NY.

Check back tomorrow for some videos and pictures - and we'll also be posting the footage from the AMP Acoustic Set in St. Paul, MN in case you missed the live broadcast.

And one more thing - here's a little teaser from the Lansing show. It was insane.

Live Acoustic Thanks!

Just wanted to say a big THANKS to everyone who tuned in to our live acoustic performance tonight on Stickam.com. We had a blast and we hope you did, too. Sorry for the lack of updated photos - unfortunately our media guy sat on the camera and broke it. Luckily there is a Super Target here in St. Paul and we got a new one today so we should be back up and running with numerous photos of our everyday life on the road.

Until then - here's a confessional from Christian and Spencer talking about life on the road and the transition from Warped Tour back to the Robot Roadkill Tour:

Robot Roadkill So Far

We've been having a blast keeping you abreast of all our goings on and whathaveyous - but we're most excited about SHOWING you the excitement that we've been having out here on the road for the past 3+ weeks. Here's a taste of the tour:

WE HAVE A WINNER!!

Our first contest came right down to the wire. Almost losing it down the stretch, winning by a nose in a photo-finish, for the first ever fan-decided acoustic AMP cover song, you have chosen...

SUCH GREAT HEIGHTS!!

Thanks to everyone for voting.

Tune into our Stickam page to see the LIVE performance of The Postal Service's "Such Great Heights" on FRIDAY, JULY 25TH AT 8PM PST. That's 10PM Central, 11PM Eastern time.

Drop us a line and let us know that you'll be tuning in. Can't wait to see you all on Friday.

A Couple Days of Rest

We've been lucky enough to have Dillon from Josephine Collective let us stay at his parent's house and completely take over their basement for the past couple days while we're in Kansas City. It's been amazing just being able to stay in one place for more than a few hours sleep. We haven't had to repack all of our belongings in over 48 hours. It almost feels normal again. But, it won't last too much longer.

We played The House Cafe in DeKalb, IL on Saturday night. It was the first club show after our stint on the Warped Tour - talk about a different experience. Really loved getting back on stage with Josephine Collective though. We've spent the past couple days driving leisurely down to KC and hanging out and resting up. Tonight we're playing a huge show at the Beaumont. More to follow on that. Until then...

The End of Warped Tour

All good things come to an end. Although I don't think any of us expected Warped Tour to be nearly as awesome as it was after our first day in Orlando, which was just brutal. It also feels like it was a month ago even though it has only been nine days. Time on the tour takes on a whole new definition. It doesn't really matter the day of the week so much as what city of the week and when we need to be there. Location of the venue and load-in time pretty much determine our schedule and all other calculations of space and time are rendered meaningless.

Now we're off to De Kalb, IL to catch up with Josephine Collective and jump back on board the Robot Roadkill Tour and we can't wait to get there. As fun as Warped was, getting back to having our days free to drive/work/write/meet fans and perform in an air conditioned club will be a breath of fresh air.

Last night we stayed at Danny's parent's house in Troy, MI. They were nice enough to let a bunch of sweaty sunburned guys invade their immaculate home. It was so much better than staying at a red-ant infested Budget Inn. Thanks Mr. and Mrs. Morris. Darryl gives his love from the trailer.

Atypical Midnight Drive

We've had so many back-to-back long distance drives in the past week that it's hard to keep the days straight. Most of our traveling takes place at night, too, since we are at the Warped Tour all day long. Some people stay awake (usually the driver) and half the group falls asleep in really uncomfortable positions on the benches in the back. It can get quiet and lonely but every now and then when we stop at some random spot in the middle of nowhere to fill up the gas tank and pick up some more caffeinated beverages, we find a little more than we bargained for. So far, Virginia has had the most fun midnight drive yet.

Sleep When You're Dead

The past two days have been epic. We had a blast playing for a bunch of music students in the Powerchord Academy at Lynn University in Boca Raton, FL. They were all between 12 - 18 years old and total prodigies. They performed after our set and were just incredible. We were as pumped to talk with them and see them perform as they were with us.

Photobucket

Then we packed up and drove 40 minutes south to Miami to jump back on the Warped Tour. We got a good night's sleep and showed up ready to rock. As soon as we pulled into the parking area downtown just near the water, we got the phone call saying that we wouldn't be playing today. Turns out that our East Coast Independent Stage got wet the day before and wasn't going to be used so we had nowhere to perform. It was a total bummer at first - but we made the best of it. We ended up meeting a TON of new fans and some old fans - including some kids from Powerchord the night before. We had a blast.

Photobucket

After Miami we ended up having to drive through the night in order to make it up to Elkton in time for Warped Tour today. We slept in a motel for about 4 hours tops with an air conditioner that had to be gerry-rigged with a binder jammed against the plug to keep it pumping the cold air through the night. All four hours of it.

But we made a ton more fans. Look for the footage to be uploaded in the next week. It's been tough to get everything out there for you to see since we've been spending our time either at a fairgrounds with no power nearby or in the van with no ability to actually capture the footage, etc.

Our Time Is Now

We survived our first day of Warped Tour. It was over 90 degrees out with the humidity level nearly breaking the barometer. It was both exhausting and exhilarating at the same time. We pushed ourselves physically and mentally further than any of us had gone before.

With only an hour of sleep or so, we played a rocking set and talked to tons of fans, which was one of the best parts of the day. So many great fans out there. We saw familiar faces and met tons of new ones. Here's Spencer and Christian to talk about how it went:

WARPED TOUR!!

440 miles from Atlanta to Orlando.
Departure time: 2:00am
Arrival Time: 8:45am

No More Darryl

After 10 trial days of being our main blogger, we've decided to relinquish the media duties from Darryl. We think he did a great job (well, most of us, at least) but he just didn't take the job seriously enough. Also, those blogging and picture duties cut into his roadie time, which left more work for the rest of us.

Darryl wanted to say a few things before he left so here he goes:

"Thank you so much for the opportunity to handle your Internets for the past week and a half. It's been amazing. I feel like I've been able to connect with so many new fans and hopefully I've left an impression and some of my wisdom has stuck with you all. Hopefully you've learned to appreciation Nelson for the great band and human beings that they are. And hopefully I'll be back again sometime soon. Always remember to party like it's 1991."

Darryl will remain on tour as our roadie, so please don't worry. You haven't seen the last of him yet.

In the meantime, today we were extremely productive. Life on the road takes its toll on everyone's bodies, brains, and brawn. So we had to take care of a bunch of life business: laundry, buying new bins for our merch, getting this new awesome video camera, and of course eating. We had to move quickly to get everything sorted out in this Target parking lot before the security guard came back and gave us a ticket.

Tonight we're playing at The Masquerade Theater in Atlanta, GA. It's this really old wooden building that was once an old mill built in 1890. Jason found out some disturbing information about the place:

We'll be joining Warped Tour for four more dates on top of the original three that we had scheduled. Keep checking back here for more information on those changes.

A Moment of Levity

In order to boost morale after the demoralizing fender bender, the AMP guys follow my advice and pump some iron for a rockin endorphin rush. Whether in a gym, in your house, on a freeway onramp in Louisiana, or in a parking lot in front of a cop, it's ALWAYS time for pushups.

Fender Bender in Tallahassee

It was bound to happen. Luckily for the guys, I was there to take care of business. Moving at a steady clip of about 1.3 miles per hour, TJ accidentally backed the trailer into a car. The damage is pretty minimal - I could pound it out with a rubber mallet and some elbow grease in about 14 seconds.

The owner of the car didn't take me up on the offer. Instead, Tallahassee's finest showed up to write up a report and dish out a ticket. The U-Haul suffered very little if at all. No visible damage on that beast. And, no one was hurt so it's all good. Welcome to life on the road. We're only a week and a day into the tour so there's going to be a lot more adventure to come. I'm ready for whatever comes at me.

Technology Bites It

Well, after a day of little to no connection with the Internet and the outside world, we're back online and in action. So, check out the band's adventure in and around New Orleans, LA.

Day 7 - Metairie/New Orleans, LA

Dealing with technological snafus is just one of the many headaches you have to deal with on tour. From issues with soundboards at the venues to trying to get a good internet connection. I'm stellar at handling sound problems at the show but this whole wireless internet thing has me totally confounded. Please bear with me while I figure it out. At the moment I can't show you all the photos from the Louisiana show at High Ground, so you'll just have to wait a little longer.

In the meantime you can check out this video of Spencer being an idiot:

PRE-SHOW WORKOUT

When you're on the road sitting in a van for as many hours as we are each day while on tour, I installed an exercise routine on the guys to keep them in shape. It's easy to eat garbage and just sit around when you're not playing a show. But I'm not making it easy for AMP. Which is why you see them getting in a good pre-show workout on the sidewalk outside The Door. They're not quite there yet, but just you wait. With 6 more weeks on tour, these guys will be like chiseled granite before you know it.

Dallas Fun

Day 6 - Midlothian, TX

Ahhh. Good ole Midlothian, TX. A wide expanse of farmland nestled in between Ft. Worth and Dallas. Aside from a creek, a highway, and a gas station/Subway combo, there really is not much else going on.

Other than Uncle Jim's place. He was nice enough to let us crash at his house last night after the Ridglea Theater show but we didn't get along all that great. He wasn't a huge fan of the Darryl. I ended up overstaying my welcome, apparently. The AMP guys didn't really get my back either and I got stuck sleeping in the van. I woke up around 9am as the sun boiled me alive in that sweatbox. It was probably the least festive 4th of July that I've ever had. No fireworks. No sparklers. No BBQ. But at least AMP put on a stellar set.

Tonight = DALLAS. I hate how everyone refers to it as "The Big D." What about Detroit!? Why does Dallas get the D recognition? Either way, Dallas is going to rock.

Don't do it for me. Do it for yourself.
